The letter to the Philippians was authored by the Apostle Paul and coauthored by Timothy. Paul founded the church in Philippi during his second missionary trip as recorded by Luke in the book of Acts (Acts 16:11-40).
Paul was arrested while in Philippi; persecuted for his teaching about Christ. This detail is noteworthy because this letter also mentions his current imprisonment (Philippians 1:7, 1:13, 1:14, 1:17), they too were going through hardship (Philippians 1:27-30).
Meaning of Philippians 1:1
Paul writes to the saints, overseers, and deacons. The saints are all those who believe in Christ, the overseers are those who met the qualifications for eldership, and the deacons are ministers within the church.
In effect, this letter was intended to be an encouragement to all of the members.
Meaning of Philippians 1:2
Paul uses the greek noun charis, which means God's favor or blessing, as a means to wish every blessing upon them. His usage in this verse is a more general use of the word, not to be confused with salvific grace.
This introduction is common throughout the epistles, and it's how Paul signs off the end of the letter (Philippians 4:23).
