What does Saddoukaios mean?

Updated: Dec 27, 2023

Saddoukaios (4523 in Strong's Concordance) is a noun in Ancient Greek that means to Sadducee, a sect of Jewish belief and members of the aristocratic class.

Their beliefs are often grouped with that of the Pharisees, but the key distinctions found in the New Testament are beliefs about resurrection, the spirit, and angels (Matthew 22:23, Mark 12:18, Luke 20:27, Acts 4:1-2, Acts 23:6-8).

Jesus taught that the teaching of the Sadducees was like leaven. It is a metaphor used throughout the Bible for sin, or any thing that spoils much with only a little. Today, leaven is still considered by Jews to mean sin.

The origin of the name Sadducee is unknown, but some believe it to be from the name of an Israelite, Zadok (Sadok in Greek, Tsadok in Hebrew).
