What is infralapsarianism?

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

Infralapsarianism is a theological term implying a logical order of God's decrees exists, and that that God decreed humanity before the fall. The term is Latin and literally means "below the fall":

  • Infra - below, beneath, under

  • Lapsus - fallen

This term is highly abstract and most Christians are not expected to encounter it. Despite this, they may hold a view of this order based on their understanding of predestination. The alternative to infralapsarianism is supralapsarianism.

Although not popular outside of Catholicism, another belief exists named Molinism.

Merits of Infralapsarianism

Infralapsarinism works best with a view of mankind that has moral responsibility and creaturely free will to choose their actions. While it does not entail any specific view of philosophy, it does not condemn reprobates to eternal damnation prior to being considered sinful.

Weaknesses of Infralapsarianism

Infralapsarianism is most criticised for diminishing the sovereignty of God. Critics point to the fall as therefore becoming a frustration to God's plan, which they perceive as incompatible with his omniscience and omnipotence.

What do I believe?

It is my belief that God decreed humanity, permit the fall, predestined the elect and reprobates based on his foreknowledge of those whom would respond with faith to his grace. Faith is neither meritorious nor a work: God alone is glorified for the salvation of all mankind.
