What is the gift of encouragement?

Updated: Mar 18, 2023

Encouragement is one of many spiritual gifts that are identified in the New Testament. It is found in Paul's letter to the Romans and comes from the Greek word paraklésis which is where we get the name of Paraclete (Holy Spirit).

The type of encouragement and exhortation that you expect from the gift of encouragement may overlap with gift of teaching which also encourages. However, there are some forms of encouragement, whether in public or private, that do not necessarily include teaching doctrine but simply offering support.

How to receive the gift of encouragement?

The gift of encouragement is one of the numerous spiritual gifts listed by Paul. There are no clear ways to attain the gift of encouragement like all other gifts. However like the rest of the gifts it is given freely by the Holy Spirit. It's possible that you may already be encouraging others and displaying the gift of encouragement without having realised that you were gifted.

If you don't believe that you have the gift of encouragement then consider praying for the gift. Furthermore, be open to opportunities where you are able to come alongside other believers and encourage them. Whether that is in bible studies, prayer, worship or as a friend. Reading the bible may also help you to identify the types of situations where encouragement is appropriate.

What was the purpose of encouragement?

The gift of encouragement like all other gifts is intended to be used in building up the body of Christ. Use of encouragement can be beneficial in fellowship with other Christians as well as ministry towards non-Christians.

Here are several examples of encouragement in the Bible:

On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.

1 Corinthians 14:3

If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.

2 Corinthians 1:6

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

Philippians 2:1-2
