What is the gift of mercy?

Updated: Jul 23, 2023

Mercy is one of the many spiritual gifts that are identified in the New Testament. The gift of mercy is identified as a motivational gift. There are no debates on whether the gift continues today, with all agreeing that mercy is still active in the church.

The main body of text that informs us that mercy is a spiritual gift is Romans 12:6-8. However, there are many other references to mercy throughout the New Testament and Jesus encourages all to be merciful, for those that show mercy will also be shown mercy by God the Father.

How to receive the gift of mercy?

Scholars agree that the gift of mercy is a motivational gift and not a miraculous gift. That means you might be motivated towards showing people mercy as opposed to providing miraculous signs of mercy. With that said, showing mercy on even those that do not deserve it may appear miraculous to the world.

As a believer we should first recognize humility in the face of our own sin. When we are able to comprehend that we too are sinful it makes it plausible to forgive others of their sins. When we live conceited and puffed up lives that place ourselves as better than others it becomes hard to forgive sinfulness.

If you would like to become more merciful then you should read the stories of Jesus and how he demonstrated mercy. Furthermore, pray to God that you may forgive others as the Lord forgives you. Come both of these with humility and you will likely be demonstrating the gift of mercy through your acts of kindness and gentless to others in the face of sin.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Matthew 5:7

And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.

Matthew 20:29-34
