Who is God the Father?

Updated: Oct 15, 2023

God the Father is the revealed title for the God of all creation (Genesis 1:1), who adopted Israel as his chosen people (Exodus 4:22), and who sent his Son to die for us (John 10:18). The Father is considered the first person in the trinity.

Revealed throughout all of scripture, God the Father is most commonly referred to as LORD in the Old Testament, and as Heavenly Father in the New Testament.

Why do we call God the Father?

The quick answer to why we call God the Father is that he reveals himself throughout scripture to be the father of his people. He shows both willingness to love and bless them, but also to discipline them for their sins.

Through the revelation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, we see God's eternal fatherhood. God is the Father of Jesus, begotten not created, and the Son shares in his Father's divine nature.

To be clear: we believe that there is one God and three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This view is evidenced throughout scripture and formalised in the doctrine of trinity.
